Sleep Disorders

Sleep disorders are a common condition in today’s society. Suffering sleep problems due to stress, anxiety, noise or discomfort are usually temporary and are not necessarily cause for concern; however there are other disorders that can have significant impacts on your health and quality of life.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is a common sleeping disorder, characterised by pauses in breathing during sleep. Each pause in breath is called an ‘apnoea’ and in more severe cases can occur hundreds of times a night. It is a problem that, if left untreated, can lead to premature fatality.

Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a movement disorder. RLS is characterised by an irresistible urge to move and stretch your legs. The more effort put in to keeping them still, the stronger the urge becomes to move them. While symptoms vary, many people say their legs feel “creepy” or “crawly”.

Insomnia

Insomnia is the inability to initiate or maintain sleep and is the most commonly reported sleep disorder in the western world. Approximately one third of people will suffer from insomnia at one stage of their life.

Circadian Rhythms

Most people have a normal cycle of waking up around 6-7am, being active during usual work hours of 9am-5pm and then becoming sleepy and ready for bed by about 9-10pm. They will sleep for approximately 8 hours before waking up again.

This process is called a circadian rhythm, it is this natural rhythm that gets affected when we work shift work or experience jetlag.

Parasomnias

The term ‘parasomnia’  is used in reference to a wide range of disruptive sleep related events, including sleepwalking, night terrors, bedwetting, and bruxism.

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder defined by constant sleepiness and a tendency to sleep at inappropriate times.

Typically, a person with narcolepsy suffers sleep attacks as well as continual sleepiness and a feeling of tiredness that is not completely relieved by any amount of sleep.
