Home Based Sleep Study

Convenient and accurate home sleep studies to help diagnose sleep disorders in the comfort of your own home.

Home Based Sleep Study

The Wesley Hospital Sleep Disorders Centre offers home sleep studies for patients who are uninsured or cannot afford the excess from an overnight hospital stay. We bulk bill these studies, which are performed using a fully integrated light weight sleep system that moves around with you so there’s no need for unplugging any wires or cables to go to the bathroom overnight.

The sleep system that the Thoracic and Sleep Group (Qld) uses records 15 channels of data. This exceeds the Australasian Sleep Association’s recommendations for a full home based polysomnography.

How Do I Book a Home Sleep Study?

You will need a referral from your GP that meets the minimum requirements for a home based sleep study. Once you have received a home sleep study referral, you can call our main office to arrange a booking time.

What Is Involved With a Home Sleep Study?

You will need to attend the Wesley Hospital Sleep Disorders Centre to be set-up by one of our scientific staff. The sleep study set-up usually takes about 45 minutes – 1 hour to complete. The sensors used to record the data are all plugged in to a small panel that sits at the front of your chest. Therefore you can easily move around without restriction.

While TSGQ does not recommend patients to drive themselves home after being set-up with the sensors, this can be easily performed.

The next morning, you will need to return to the Wesley Hospital Sleep Disorders Centre to have the sensors removed. This process takes approximately 10 minutes.

Your sleep study data will be downloaded from the recording device, analysed by our trained staff and reported on by our Sleep Physicians. Your referring doctor will be sent the report including follow-up recommendations from our Physicians.

What Can a Home Sleep Study Show?

Home sleep studies have grown steadily over the last few years. This finding is likely a result of increased accuracy, reliability and comfort related to home sleep study equipment.

Home sleep studies can make a reliable diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea, mixed sleep apnoea syndrome, nocturnal hypoxaemia and Periodic Leg Movement Disorder. Home sleep studies may also be a preferred option for objectively measuring some types of insomnia.
