If you struggle to fall asleep or want a healthier nighttime routine, reading before bed could be your secret weapon. According to the Sleep Foundation, making reading part of your wind-down ritual can lead to faster sleep onset, fewer nighttime awakenings, and improved sleep quality overall.

Reading helps your mind shift away from daily stressors and encourages physical relaxation — your heart rate slows, your muscles unwind, and your mind quiets. Compared to screen time, reading is far less disruptive. Blue light from phones or tablets can suppress melatonin and interfere with your natural sleep cycle. That’s why experts recommend using physical books or blue-light–reduced e-readers if needed.

What you read also matters. Avoid intense thrillers or emotionally charged content that might keep you wired. Instead, opt for calming fiction, essays, or poetry — something soothing but not overly stimulating. Audiobooks can be a good alternative too, especially if narrated in a calm tone, though they don’t offer quite the same benefits as reading.

For kids, bedtime stories provide both developmental and sleep benefits. For adults, it’s about consistency. Dim the lights, lower the room temperature, and set a regular routine that includes 15–30 minutes of relaxing reading.

Ultimately, reading before bed is a low-tech, enjoyable way to calm your mind and signal to your body that it’s time to rest. Try swapping scrolling for a few pages tonight — your sleep might just thank you for it.
