When a child is struggling with behaviour, it is quite common as a society to instantly assume its emotional, developmental or related to ill-discipline at home. However, experts in sleep medicine are urging the community to consider underlying sleep disorders as a possible cause.

Children who are not getting enough quality sleep will not always appear the stereotypical tired. Instead, hyperactivity, impulsive and irritable or aggressive symptoms may be present, it is these symptoms that will often lead doctors and parents down the ADHD rabbit hole. The focus being on the behavioural concerns and not the background health or sleep concerns.

Experts are stressing to include sleep assessments as part of any investigation into  ongoing behavioural difficulties. As any number of sleep disorders can contribute. From insomnia and sleep deprivation, to movement or breathing disorders like sleep apnoea – following a holistic approach can always be considered.

Recognising the link between sleep and behaviour can help ensure children receive the right diagnosis and treatment. Sometimes, improving a child’s sleep is one of the most effective ways to improve their daytime wellbeing. Allowing them to thrive both at home and at school.
