TIME TRAVEL
With international travel back in full swing, we thought it was high time (pun intended) we offered our readers some helpful advice on that inescapable misery of flying across time zones – no, not airplane food or screaming babies – but: jetlag! Not all of us can or maybe even want to adjust our body clocks before we go away. But fortunately, that’s not the only solution to avoid post-aero-zombification!
For starters, if you’re travelling only 1-2 times zones, you’re likely going to be fine relative to home-time.
Travelling more than three time zones onward and in a westward path e.g. Brisbane to Delhi, the simplest thing to try (wherever possible) is to schedule plans at your destination that correspond to same/similar times on home soil.
If you travel more than three time zones in an eastward path, schedule things later than you would correspond with “home” time, particularly if you’re travelling from closer to GMT. Making sense so far? This is the general rule of thumb when you’re on shorter lengths of stay and crossed time zones.
For longer stays, the best therapy for jet lag is not only free, but we also all get a lifetime supply: daylight! Travelling eastward, soak up the warm rays of morning sunlight, avoid bright lighting after dark and when you’re travelling westward, try the opposite – until of course, you’re back on time!
