World Hand Hygiene Day

06 May World Hand Hygiene Day

Every year on May 5th, the World Health Organization launches World hand hygiene day. This campaign reminds healthcare professionals of one of the simplest and most effective methods of reducing hospital acquired infections. Clean hands.

Hospital acquired infections affect millions of patients worldwide each year. The good news is that appropriate hand hygiene practices can prevent up to 50% of avoidable infections.

For healthcare professionals, the World Health Organization and Hand Hygiene Australia promote the “5 moments for hand hygiene.”

1. Entering the patient’s zone before touching the patient
2. Immediately before a procedure.
3. Immediately after a procedure or body fluid exposure risk
4. After touching a patient before you leave the patient zone.
5. After touching a patient’s surroundings

These moments are especially critical in clinical environments such as sleep labs, where equipment, close patient contact, and overnight care increase transmission risks.

Alcohol-based hand rub remains suitable in most clinical situations as it is easy to access, effective and less irritating than repeated soap-and-water washing. However, visible soiling or exposure to certain pathogens still requires proper hand washing with soap and water.

Patients can play a part as well. Here is how:
1. Clean your hands regularly
2. Use hand sanitizer when entering or leaving healthcare facilities
3. Avoid touching laboratory equipment unnecessarily
4. Follow instructions for cleaning CPAP equipment.

Furthermore, as flu season begins, it is important to wear a mask if you have any symptoms such as coughing.

When everyone is proactive in maintaining appropriate hygiene, the risk of hospital acquired infections substantially decreases. Remember Clean Hands save lives.
