What is good sleep?

14 Aug What is good sleep?

Good sleep is commonly associated with good health and a sense of well-being. However, it is very common to find discrepancies about what are the elements required for ‘good sleep’ or a feeling of restoration in the morning.

The World Sleep Society website lists three key elements of good quality sleep and their meanings

  1. DEPTH: They define as the sleep is deep enough to be restorative
  2. DURATION: The length of sleep achieved
  3. CONTINUITY: sleep without fragmentation

The National Sleep Foundation describes good quality sleep when the following characteristics are present:

  1. Sleeping more time while in bed (at least 85 per cent of the total time),
  2. Falling asleep in 30 minutes or less,
  3. Waking up no more than once per night; and Being awake for 20 minutes or less after initially falling asleep.

Both groups have a pretty similar standpoint on what is a good night’s sleep.

Do you think you sleep well??
