Good sleep is commonly associated with good health and a sense of well-being. However, it is very common to find discrepancies about what are the elements required for ‘good sleep’ or a feeling of restoration in the morning.
The World Sleep Society website lists three key elements of good quality sleep and their meanings
- DEPTH: They define as the sleep is deep enough to be restorative
- DURATION: The length of sleep achieved
- CONTINUITY: sleep without fragmentation
The National Sleep Foundation describes good quality sleep when the following characteristics are present:
- Sleeping more time while in bed (at least 85 per cent of the total time),
- Falling asleep in 30 minutes or less,
- Waking up no more than once per night; and Being awake for 20 minutes or less after initially falling asleep.
Both groups have a pretty similar standpoint on what is a good night’s sleep.
Do you think you sleep well??
