Summer Sleep Hacks

15 Oct Summer Sleep Hacks

Summer is fast approaching and the last of the cool nights will soon be gone and those hot humid Queensland nights will be back.  The body naturally cools at night and core temperature drops slightly once sleep has initiated.  If the temperature in the room is too hot it can be uncomfortable and also very disruptive to your natural sleep cycles.

But how can we beat the heat to stay cool at night?

  1. Let fresh air in. Optimal room temperature is between 16-18 degrees so remember to open the windows if you don’t have air-conditioning.
  2. A chilled drink can significantly reduce body temperature before going to bed. Keep the ice trays filled so you can have an ice cold water before bed.
  3. Cotton sheets are preferable over satin or poly products which don’t breathe and may trap in heat causing you to sweat. Even consider about putting them in a plastic bag and put them in the freezer for a few minutes before bed.
  4. Adjust the fan to pull hot air up instead of just pushing it around the room.
  5. Fill a sock with raw rice and put it in the freezer for an hour. You’ll then have a makeshift cold pack without the condensation of ice!
